Let’s get into the blog.
Springtime: Waking Your Lawn from a Deep Sleep

Ontario's winters can be harsh, which means spring is a time for renewal. Now's the time for you to undo some of the damage that's been done to your lawn from snow and ice, including thin or bare spots. This is why it's better to opt for cool-season grass seeds. For Ontario in particular, there are several options to choose from:
Seed: Cool Season Grass
Kentucky Bluegrass – Durable, rich colour, self-spreading.
Perennial Ryegrass – Quick germination, ideal for overseeding.
Fine Fescue – Tolerates shade and low-fertility soils.
But when is the best time to apply seeds in the spring? In our experience, mid-April to early May is the most reliable time because the soil temperature is more likely to stay at about 10°C consistently. If the soil is too cold, the grass may not thrive.
Also, consider hiring a lawn care professional to prepare the grass before you lay seed. They can come in and remove:
Dead grass
Debris
Leaves
Weeds
Professionals can also:
Rake dead foliage
Level soil
Aerate the lawn
AND… even test the pH levels if necessary.
Fertilizer: Slow-Release Starters Are Best
The best way to support new, springtime grass is to apply a slow-release, high-nitrogen fertilizer with a proper nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) ratio, such as 20-5-10. Here are some chemical breakdowns to consider.
Nitrogen (N): Promotes lush green top growth.
Phosphorus (P): Supports root development (important for new grass).
Potassium (K): Boosts hardiness and stress tolerance.
Make sure your chosen product is phosphorus-free unless seeding, as Ontario regulations limit phosphorus use to prevent water pollution.
Minerals: Test First, Then Add the Boost
Spring is essential for doing a soil test on your lawn; many Ontario garden centres provide kids and can recommend labs for testing. Depending on your test, there are several steps you might need to take, such as adding:
Lime: If your soil is acidic (below pH 6), lime helps restore balance.
Iron: For that deep green look, especially if your grass looks yellowish.
Calcium & Magnesium: Often added via dolomitic lime if the soil test shows deficiencies.
If you need help with managing the health and longevity of your grass, worry not: Jody’s Lawn Care has been in business for more than two decades and can handle the heavy lifting for you.
Summer: Support & Maintain

Ah, summer! It’s the season we all wait for, and, hopefully, if you did everything right in the springtime, you should be enjoying your lawn by now. However, your grass still needs attention, and you may need to do a little extra work, depending on your circumstances.
Seed: Skip It (For the Most Part)
Summer can get hot and dry in Ontario, especially when looking at the Southern provinces. From June to August, it’s generally not a great idea to seed cool-season grasses. Rather, summertime is the season to manage the fruits of your labour some general maintenance.
However, if you do need to seed (such as due to lawn damage caused by construction, moving, or drought), water your grass daily and use a drought-tolerant blend of seed. You just need to be prepared to do a little additional maintenance – luckily, Jody’s Lawn Care can handle that part on your behalf.
Fertilizer: Light Feeding or None
If you put too much nitrogen on your lawn this summer, you can torch the grass. Make sure that if your grass looks completely healthy, just skip fertilizing altogether unless otherwise advised by a professional. However, if you notice that your lawn is beginning to dry out and yellow, you can apply a low-nitrogen, high-potassium blend fertilizer to help the grass hold up against drought and heat.
Minerals: Apply Organic Boosts
For a natural boost, you can add composted tea, liquid seaweed, or even humic acid to condition and improve the microbial activity of your lawn's soil. These compounds won’t burn your grass and will help to keep it resilient through particularly dry spells. Here are some additional steps you can take to help struggling summer grass:
Be Smart When You Water: Try to water early in the morning, and water deeply. This is more effective than frequent, shallow watering later in the day. Try to aim for at least 1 inch of water per week.
Hire Professionals: If you notice significant browning and fatigue in your grass, it’s worth it to have it assessed by a professional.
Fall: The Best Time to Rebuild

The season is winding down, and as the leaves turn to various shades of red, orange, and yellow, you’re going to want to begin preparing the grass for winter. Doing so ensures that all your efforts aren’t for nothing.
Seed: Prime Time to Overseed!
September is the ideal time to begin overseeding in Ontario. You have cooler temperatures, plenty of morning precipitation, and reduced issues caused by weeds, giving grass a great environment to take root before winter rolls in. You can use the same cool-season grass seed you would in the springtime.
Here’s how to prepare for seeding:
Raking or dethatching to expose the soil.
Aerating to improve seed-to-soil contact.
Spread high-quality seed generously.
Water consistently until germination is complete.
Fertilizer: High-Nitrogen Fall Blend
Fertilizing in fall is a step you CANNOT miss. If you don't provide your grass with the energy to store nutrients over the winter, you won't see it sprout back stronger in the spring. Make sure to, again, use high-nitrogen fertilizer in late September or early October. This step is essential because:
It helps root growth and thickening.
It builds against cold resistance.
It improves colour retention into early winter.
Minerals: Winter Prep
Pretty simple here: if your earlier soil test in the spring indicated your lawn has some deficiencies that have yet to be corrected, fall is your last chance to correct them. You can try adding lime or micronutrients as needed. Having said that, don’t be too heavy-handed; trying to overcorrect can have the opposite effect.
Winter: Rest & Plan, You’ve Earned It
Your chores are mostly complete for the season, meaning you can take a little time to relax before your grass re-emerges. However, winter gives you some essential time to consider a few things:
Talk with a lawn care expert or garden centre specialist for the best blends for trouble areas, such as shady areas and damp spots.
Go over your soil test results and develop a plan of execution for the following spring.
Revolve lawncare on any planned renovations or topdressing for the spring.
Connect with your local lawn care specialists and hand over the care of your grass to the pros!
Additionally, as you lay down salt to melt ice and snow, make sure you’re not getting it on your lawn. Its components can skill grass and make it difficult to grow back.
